anthologies

i take back all the bad things i've said about anthologies. i'm teaching two creative writing classes this fall and i sure wish there was a good anthology to use that would include a variety of contemporary poets from different countries. instead i'll have to put stuff on elec reserve.

though the more i think of it, the more i think it's really problematic to use an anthology at all.

Aren't you really just creating an anthology?

Just make a list of poets you really like, add poets people you know and whose taste you trust like, and voilĂ .

Of course, considering the small amount of poetry in translation available here, this might be difficult.

I think what I don't like is an anthology-based way of setting up the class - that there is a set amount of knowledge the students have to gain. But of course, yes, in some ways a class is always an anthology.

Electronic reserve is a thoughtful way of serving students; it saves them money and you get to teach what you want.

Yes, I did think of that too.

Yeah, I was out last night thinking about this issue, and I thought, "If it's electronic, if it's chosen by Johannes, then while it is an anthology, it is entirely flexible!" If you decide you want something different, you're not bound to it. And if a student likes something you picked, you can always suggest they read something else. I think the electronic reserve system is very good.
